If It's Not Batik, Then What Is It? Discover the Stories Behind Sabahan Motif through our Sandai collection.

“Is this Batik?” It’s a question we often get. And the answer is both simple and layered: No, our prints are not traditional batik but they are just as meaningful, just as wearable, and just as culturally rich.
At Changgih Designs, we specialize in digitally printed fabrics that celebrate the beautiful diversity of Sabahan indigenous motifs, featuring the heritage of the Murut, Rungus, Bajau, Dusun, and more.

While batik from Peninsular Malaysia is known for its wax-resist dyeing technique, many modern batik prints today are digitally produced. Similarly, our prints are digitally created as we focus on Sabah’s identity and indigenous stories.

One of our designs is called Sandai, a tribute to the traditional Murut weaver.
With a strong weaving heritage, this people group celebrates their heritage through the baskets and various traditional handicrafts that they make.
Materials most often used by the Murut people for weaving are Rattan & Bamboo. Because rattan cannot be dyed, the basket made from rotan will have a pattern that is not noticed until the bag is close, as there is no color differentiation. This is known in the Murut language as Hinula, woven items with a design that is not immediately visible due to no color differentiation.

Puus, a type of bamboo, is the preferred weaving material because of its ability to absorb dye. This allows for the many intricate, vibrant design seen on hats, baskets, and other traditional woven items from the Murut tribe. (Info from Joyce binti Andolok, Kampung Sugiang Tengah Kemabong, Tenom.)
Linaub Silar - a motif that originates from the Silar leaf. This leaf is often used in Murut ceremonies. (Info from Sabah Crafts, Edited by Jennifer P. Linggi)

In every thread and line, we try to honor these stories.
So, can you wear our prints like Batik?
Yes, with pride.

Our pieces are created to be worn for office wear, formal events, cultural occasions, or everyday elegance. They offer an alternative for those who want to wear something Malaysian, yet deeply Sabahan.

We’re not here to replace batik. We’re here to expand the story to include Sabah Borneo, indigenous voices, and designs that deserve a global spotlight.
Whether you choose a wristlet, dress, men’s shirt, bag or keychain — you’re wearing a story.
